From texture and frieze, to nylon and wool we carry it all. As a high percentage of the soft floor covering that will go into homes, carpet offers homeowners the option to bring a wide variety of design into their homes.
There are several different types of fibers out there that carpet is made out of and each fiber offers its own unique characteristics and durability. Carpet can last for many years in a home depending on the care it receives. More often than not a carpet will “ugly” out before it actually ever wears out.
An important role in the life of a carpet is the padding that is put underneath of it. A thicker pad (1/2” for example) and denser pad (8# for example) is going to extend the wear life of a carpet by reducing the amount of friction between the subfloor and the carpet backing. Not to mention making the carpet more comfortable beneath the foot. There are several options to choose from for carpet pad including anti-microbial, stain protection, and anti-odor. A carpet professional can help you to determine which type of pad and carpet will best suit your wants and needs. |

Fiber Types [top]
As mentioned above there are several different types of fiber that a carpet may be made out of. Each fiber has different inherent qualities and will perform diff erently than the other.
The most common fiber types are:
- Nylon – For many years now this has been the popular choice for carpeting due to its durability. It naturally resists crushing, soiling and holds color well. Nylon also holds “memory” meaning that if your carpet starts to mat down, you can have a professional carpet cleaner come and do a hot water extraction which should re-activate this memory and bring the carpeting close to the original state as it was when installed.
- Wool – Natural fiber that is extremely durable and soft. It also hides soil better than other synthetic fibers.
Olefin(Polypropylene) - Very stain resistant and cleans easily, and is typically less expensive than other fibers, Popular choice for commercial and outdoor carpet. However, attracts oily stains much more easily than other fibers and is susceptible to crushing.
- Polyester – Easy to clean and resistant to water, soluble stains. Less expensive than a nylon but does not hold up to abrasion as well and can possibly shed.
- PET Recycled Fiber Polyester – Non-allergenic recycled fiber made from bottle caps with high stain resistance. It less expensive than nylon, but nylon is much stronger.
- Triexta (Smartstrand) – High durability and resistance to staining. Also has a soft feel to it.
