Ceramic, Porcelain, Glass and Stone

With hundreds of options to choose from ceramic, porcelain, glass, and stone tile offer a variety of design options. Looks ranging from contemporary, traditional, elegant, funky, and transitional can all be achieved. Just by changing the pattern of a tile you can achieve a different feel.

Not only are there a variety of looks available, there are also many applications that tile can be used for. Some of the more common uses are floors, walls or wainscoting in bathrooms, kitchen backsplashes, shower walls and floors, whirlpool surrounds, fireplaces surrounds, and countertops. You can also use them for more creative projects like mirror frames or tabletops.

Tile is a great choice for many applications and provides a durable surface with minimum maintenance. Some basics are listed below:

Ceramic Tile – made out of fired clay with a glaze applied over it. Ceramic tile is usually a more economically priced option. Provides good durability and minimal maintenance.

Porcelain Tile- tile can either be a glazed porcelain or color body porcelain. Color body means that if a tile chips for some reason that the color will run through the tile and be less noticeable whereas on a glazed tile you might see a different color. Porcelain tile is also slightly more water resistant than a ceramic tile.

Stone Tile – can be made out of marble, travertine, or limestone. These are natural stone products and are very popular because of the natural color variation that runs through them. Most of the natural stones are very durable however, because they are porous products they require a bit more care than a manufactured product. Colors and pricing on stone will vary by the grade and region that they come from.

Glass/Metal Tile – These are decorative tiles that can bring in a fun element to any application. As most of these products are decorative you want to check before using a particular product in a flooring application.
